He started his practice at Bombay High Court. He worked with several prominent lawyers including, Mr. Fali S Nariman, Mr. Soli Sorabjee, Mr. Ashok Desai, and Mr. Ashok Sen. In March 1990, he was designated as a senior advocate. In December 1999, he was appointed as the Advocate General of Maharashtra which he served till June 2004 till he was elevated as the Solicitor General of India. During his career, he handled various important cases, including the Enron cases and the stock market scam.
In honor of Dr. Goolam E. Vahanvati, the Scholarship Fund is instituted with a purpose to provide aspiring law students from an underprivileged background the opportunity to study in a reputed law college in India in which they secure admission through merit.

Eligibility
Students who wish to apply for this scholarship must fulfill the following eligibility criteria. They must:

be an Indian citizen

be already enrolled in any year of an LLB/LLM degree course at a recognized law institute in India, or have applied for CLAT, LSAT-India, AILET, or any other law entrance exam

have scored a minimum of 60% in Class X and XII board exams

have an annual family income of not more than INR 10,00,000 from all sources

be willing to sign-up for scholarship fund’s annual mentorship programs to assist and nurture the next batches of GEV Merit Scholars
Benefits:
INR 50,000 to 2,00,000 per year
GEV Memorial Merit Scholarship 2020-21 for Law Students
Eligibility
Students who wish to apply for this scholarship must fulfil the following eligibility criteria. They must:
- be an Indian citizen
- be already enrolled in any year of an LLB/LLM degree course at a recognized law institute in India, or have applied for CLAT, LSAT-India, AILET, or any other law entrance exam in 2021
- have scored a minimum of 60% in Class X and XII board exams
- have an annual family income not more than INR 10,00,000 (10 lakh) from all sources
- be willing to sign-up for scholarship fund’s annual mentorship programs to assist and nurture the next batches of GEV Merit Scholars
NOTE: Students who may be taking the entrance exams post the deadline (31st May 2021) will also get an opportunity to apply for the scholarship till 31st July 2021.
Benefits:
INR 50,000 to INR 2,00,000 per year
- Subsequent Scholarship installment will be based on the scholar's academic performance
- Mentoring from top law professionals
GEV Memorial Merit Scholarship for Law Students-2019
Eligibility
Students must fulfill the following eligibility criteria. They must:
- Be an Indian citizen
- Be already enrolled in any year of an LLB/LLM degree course at a recognized law institute in India, or applying for CLAT, LSAT-India, AILET, or any other law entrance exam in 2019
- Have scored a minimum of 60% in class X and XII board exams
- Have an annual family income from all sources not more than INR 10,00,000
- Be willing to sign-up for scholarship fund’s annual mentorship programs to assist and nurture the next batches of GEV Merit Scholars
NOTE: Class 12 passed students taking entrance exams are also eligible to apply for the scholarship. However, scholarship will be awarded once the student enrolled in a reputed law school.
Benefits:
- INR 50,000 to INR 1,50,000 aid per scholar per year towards payment of tuition fees and other academic expenses
- Subsequent Scholarship installment will be based on the scholar's academic performance
- Mentoring from top law professionals
