He spent his early childhood in the village of Chinnamanur and later grew up in the town of Madurai, all in Tamil Nadu. Like many of his generation, born just around India’s independence, he firmly believed that education and hard work were the keys to economic stability.
He was an excellent student throughout school and college, but unlike many high achievers, he was not narrowly studious. Instead, he nurtured a wide range of interests—music, drama, sports, and writing—and was widely popular in the community. His two elder sisters, much older than him, played a significant role in shaping his childhood.
A remarkable aspect of his academic journey is that he earned three Master’s degrees—an M.Sc. in Physics, an M.A. in English Literature, and later, a Master’s in Financial Management (MFM). After spending four fulfilling years as a demonstrator at Madura College, Madurai, he successfully cleared the highly competitive Reserve Bank of India (RBI) selection process and began his professional career in Delhi and Chandigarh.
A few years later, the division he worked in became part of the Industrial Development Bank of India (IDBI), and subsequently, a sub-division evolved into the Export-Import Bank of India (Exim Bank). Mr. Raman was associated with Exim Bank from its inception and dedicated the majority of his career there (1982–2009), primarily in Mumbai with a few years in Delhi. Rising through the ranks, he became part of the top management team in 2001 as Executive Director.
Mr. Raman was married to Mrs. Vijayalakshmi, who was the pillar of strength behind his life and career. He deeply believed in the power of education and laid a strong foundation for his children, both of whom went on to become alumni of IIT and IIM—an achievement he inspired and cherished greatly. Beyond his family, he also extended support to many young people in their education and early careers whenever possible.
Mr. Raman remained active and engaged until the very end of his life, passing away in 2021. In his memory, his family has established a scholarship for low-income, high-potential students pursuing engineering at the IITs, honoring his lifelong belief in education as a force for change.
This scholarship is made possible through the generous contributions of his family members and loved ones:

Buddy4Study follows a zero-tolerance policy against fraud. Every application goes through multiple layers of due diligence — including Aadhaar/DigiLocker verification, document checks, duplicate detection, and anomaly tracking. Students are further verified through mandatory telephonic or video interviews, and in some cases, physical/home visits. Only those who clear all checks, meet eligibility criteria, and show genuine need are shortlisted. Finally, bank accounts are penny-drop verified before funds are released, ensuring scholarships reach genuine students only — no shortcuts, no fraud, just fairness.
