How Much Does It Cost to Sponsor a Student's Education in India?

From a girl's school year to an engineering or law degree – a practical guide to what sponsoring a student in India costs, with real scholarship amounts from Kind Circle.

"How much would it take to support one student?" This is often the first question people ask before they give. The answer depends on what you want to support – a girl's school year, an engineering degree, a medical seat or a law course. This guide gives you a practical picture, using real scholarships already running on Kind Circle.

What does "sponsoring a student" actually cover?

A student's education costs much more than tuition. Depending on the course, it can include:

  • Tuition and exam fees
  • Hostel and mess charges
  • Books, stationery and uniforms
  • A laptop or equipment for technical and medical courses
  • Travel to and from college

You do not need to cover everything. Many donors fund one part, such as fees or a laptop, and that alone can keep a student in college.

Real examples from Kind Circle

Scholarship Who it supports Amount per scholar
Aadya Scholarship Girls in Classes 9 and 10 ₹5,400 a year
R.M.V. Raman Scholarship Engineering students at the IITs Up to ₹70,000
KVS & Geetha Scholarship Class 6 to postgraduate students Up to ₹1,00,000
GEV Memorial Scholarship Law students ₹50,000 to ₹2,00,000 a year

As you can see, a meaningful scholarship can start at a few thousand rupees for a school student and go up to a few lakh rupees for a professional course.

A simple way to think about it

School students (Classes 6–12)

Support here usually goes towards fees, books, uniforms and exam costs. It is often the most affordable level of support – and one of the most important, because this is when many students, especially girls, are at risk of leaving school. Read why girls drop out after Class 10.

Undergraduate degrees (BA, BSc, BCom)

Costs depend a lot on whether the college is government-run or private, and whether the student lives in a hostel. A scholarship that covers tuition or hostel fees can make the difference.

Engineering, medicine and law

Professional courses are the most expensive, especially at private institutions or when a student must move to another city. Families often take loans or sell assets. Scholarships here tend to be larger and are often renewed every year based on performance.

One student, one year, or many years?

  • One-time support – helps a student over an urgent hurdle, such as a fee deadline or a laptop.
  • Yearly support – renewed every year as long as the student keeps up their marks. This gives students the security to focus on studies.
  • A group of students – a fixed budget spread across several scholars each year.

You don't have to do it alone

If the full cost feels like a lot, bring others in. On Kind Circle, family members, friends, colleagues and alumni can all give to the same circle. Small monthly contributions from a group can add up to a full scholarship. Ideas include birthday giving, an employee giving circle, or an alumni circle.

How much of my gift reaches the student?

Most of every rupee goes directly to the student or their institution. A small share supports the work that makes giving safe and transparent: finding students, verifying documents, disbursing funds, issuing receipts and reporting. Read where your donation goes, step by step. Current plans are listed on the pricing page.

Planning your giving: three examples

  • A small yearly budget: Support one or two school students every year, renewing as long as they keep up their studies. This is a lovely way to start a family scholarship.
  • A medium budget: Fund one college student through a full degree, with yearly renewal based on progress. You get to follow one young person's journey from first year to graduation.
  • A larger budget: Run your own named scholarship for a group of students each year – for example, engineering students from your home state, or girls in Classes 9 to 12.

Whatever the size, the Kind Circle team can help you design a scholarship that fits your budget, from eligibility to the number of scholars.
