Honour a Teacher Who Changed Your Life With a Scholarship in Their Name

Remember the teacher who believed in you? Here is how former students can honour a teacher – living or late – with a named scholarship on Kind Circle.

Think back to school or college. Somewhere along the way, there was probably a teacher who saw something in you before you saw it yourself. Maybe they stayed late to explain a lesson, lent you a book, or told you that you could do more than you imagined. Many of us never got the chance to thank them properly. A scholarship in their name is a beautiful way to do it – and to pass their gift on to the next generation.

Why a teacher's scholarship means so much

  • It continues their life's work. Teachers spend their lives helping students grow. A scholarship keeps that work going, year after year.
  • It reaches students like you once were. Bright, curious, and sometimes held back only by money.
  • It brings former students together. Classmates who remember the same teacher can all contribute to one shared tribute.
  • It comforts the family. For a teacher's family, seeing their name live on through young people can be deeply moving.

Teachers who are honoured this way

On Kind Circle, several circles celebrate people who believed in learning. The KVS & Geetha Scholarship Kind Circle honours a couple who taught freely all their lives – KVS taught students before dawn before going to work, and Geetha taught a group of more than 40 women. Read their story.

You can create something similar for a teacher, a professor, a coach or a mentor who changed your life – whether they are still with us or have passed away.

Shaping the scholarship around your teacher

The best teacher scholarships reflect who the teacher was. Some ideas:

  • A favourite subject – a mathematics teacher's scholarship for students pursuing science or engineering.
  • Their school – support for current students of the school where they taught.
  • Their values – a teacher who always helped struggling students could be honoured with a scholarship for first-generation learners.
  • Their hometown or region – students from the place they came from.
  • Future teachers – students training to become teachers themselves.

How to start a teacher's scholarship on Kind Circle

  1. Share your idea through the Start a Scholarship form – just two short sections.
  2. Design it with the Kind Circle team – who it supports, eligibility, amount and number of scholars.
  3. Get a dedicated page on kindcircle.org with your teacher's story and photograph. If the teacher's family is involved, they can help tell the story.
  4. Invite classmates and colleagues to contribute. Former students in India and abroad can all give to the same circle.
  5. Select verified scholars – students are verified by the Kind Circle team, and you approve the final list.
  6. Share the updates – tell everyone who gave how the scholars are doing.

You do not need to register a trust or NGO. Your scholarship runs under Buddy4Study India Foundation, which handles receipts, compliance and disbursal. Read our step-by-step guide to starting a memorial scholarship on Kind Circle.

Bringing a batch together

A teacher's scholarship is often the perfect project for a batch reunion. Thirty or forty classmates giving a modest amount each can fund a full scholarship every year. It turns a reunion into something lasting – and gives everyone a reason to stay in touch. Read about alumni giving.

If your teacher is still with us

You do not have to wait. A scholarship created in a living teacher's honour can be one of the most touching gifts they ever receive. Imagine telling a retired teacher that, every year, a student will study further because of them. Some teachers even enjoy meeting the scholars who receive support in their name.

Telling your teacher's story

The page for your teacher's scholarship is where their memory lives online, so it is worth taking care over. Gather a few memories from classmates – a lesson they remember, a saying the teacher repeated, a kindness they never forgot. Add a good photograph and, if the family agrees, a few lines from them. These small details turn a scholarship page into a tribute that former students will want to share.

Scholars who receive the scholarship can also read the story. Many say that knowing the person behind their scholarship makes them want to live up to that name.

Frequently asked questions

It is always good to involve the family, especially for a memorial scholarship. Their blessing and their stories make the scholarship more meaningful.

How much do we need to start?
You can begin with support for one student and grow from there. See how much it costs to sponsor a student.

Will contributors get receipts?
Yes. Every donor receives an official receipt from Buddy4Study India Foundation.

Say thank you in the best way
